Montpellier is a university city. It has one of the oldest Faculties of Medicine in Europe and students today make up a quarter of the city's population.

This reservoir of highly-educated personnel has given rise to a unique critical mass of universities, research institutes and multinational and start-up businesses in 3 key sectors, frequently working together on R&D projects.


Information & Communications Technology
ICT represents the Montpellier's largest centre of excellence, representing over 12,000 jobs and 1,300 businesses. The sector subdivides into 3 distinct activities: Software: software and systems development, data mining and data warehousing and bioinformatics Electronics: including microelectronics, robotics, indutrial sensors and smart cards Multimedia: games developers, web agencies and VR

Universities
Montpellier II University and the various specialist university technology colleges represent a total of 15,000 students. These institutions produce graduates in all branches of computer sciences, robotics and automation.

Research Institutes
Montpellier is also home to 5 research institutes:
IDATE: leading European skills centre in TMT research and market studies LIRMM: informatics, bioinformatics, robotics and microelectronics
LAIN: nanophysics
LEM: electrotechnics
CEM2: electronics and opto-electronics
